On November 18, Aniplex of America hosted the unforgettable experience of the KILL la KILL x GURREN LAGANN THE MOVIE Anniversary Event at Anime NYC to celebrate KILL la KILL’s 10th anniversary as well as the GURREN LAGANN films’ 15th anniversary.
The event featured special guests including Director Hiroyuki Imaishi and Hiromi Wakabayashi from studio TRIGGER, as well as acclaimed Art Director Shigeto Koyama. Aniplex of America also invited English dub cast members from KILL la KILL Erica Mendez, the voice Ryuko Matoi, and Christine Marie Cabanos, the voice of Mako Mankanshoku.
There were a number of significant moments throughout this event, ranging from the explanation from the creators of KILL la KILL’s initial concept and its transformation journey to hearing unique perspectives about GURREN LAGANN’s production process! Aniplex of America’s acclaimed panel of guests also imparted some words for us that reflect their achievements and experience.
Hiroyuki Imaishi gave consideration to the earlier days of his career, recalling,
“Initially, when I made GURREN LAGANN my goal, was to make a series that would last 10 years. And obviously, it's been 15 years now.”
At another pivotal moment in the programming, Hiromi Wakabayashi made a heartfelt statement,
“What I value most in these designs aren't aesthetics, but how cool or how nice they are perceived within the story or the series.”
During another section of the event, Shigeto Koyama took time to consider this idea to share with the audience,
“I always thought that GURREN LAGANN would be like a milestone for Imaishi's career. […] So I like to think of GURREN LAGANN as the bone to extract all the stock to further juice the content. The bone's not dry yet, we'll continue to juice the bones for the stock.”
The event also featured a surprise video message from Katsuyuki Konishi, the iconic voice of Kamina from GURREN LAGANN, who shared his memories of working on the series. The message concluded with the announcement of the theatrical release to roaring applause from the fans.
GURREN LAGANN THE MOVIE -Childhood’s End- arrives in theaters on January 16 & 17, followed by GURREN LAGANN THE MOVIE -The Lights in the Sky Are Stars- on January 23 & 24 both sub and English dub, as well in 4DX and MX4D theaters!
